This crocheted onion bag is wonderful to place your onions in, and you will be so proud that you made it yourself. They also make unique gifts. The pattern below is for the onion sack shown but with a little know how, you can make them for taters, carrots, etc. Materials (Onion sack): Coats & Clarks Speed Cro-Sheen (100-yd ball): Color A = 4; Color B = 1. Steel crochet hook No. 0 or size to give gauge. Gauge: Mesh; 6 sts = 1" and 4 rows = 3". 5 dc rows = 2". Finished Measurements: Width: 16" Length (including handles) = 22". Mesh: With A, ch 1 loosely. Rnd 1: Ch 6, (tr, ch 2) 11 times in 7th ch from hook, join with sl st in 4th ch of ch-6; 12 mesh. (Note: Each sp = 1 mesh.) Rnd 2: Ch 6, tr in same ch as joining, * ch 2, tr, ch 2, tr all in next tr; rep from * around, ch 2, join with sl st to 4th ch of ch-6; 24 mesh. Rnd 3: Rep round 2; 48 mesh. Rnd 4: Ch 6, tr in same ch as joining, * (ch2, tr in next tr) 3 times, ch 2, tr, ch 2, tr all in next tr; rep from * around, end ch 2, join in 4th ch of ch-6; 60 mesh. Rnds 5, 6 and 7: Ch 6, tr in next tr, * ch 2, tr in next tr; rep from * around, ch 2, join in 4th ch of ch-6. Band: Rnd 1: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next sp, dc in next tr; rep from * around, end 2 dc in last sp; drop A to wrong side, insert hook in top of ch 3, with B yo, draw thru ch and lp on hook; 180 dc. (note: ch-3 at beg counts as 1 dc.) Rnd 2: With B, ch 1, sc in each dc around, join as follows: insert hook in first sc, yo, drop B to wrong side, yo, with A, yo draw thru st and lp on hook. Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in each sc around, join as follows: insert hook in 3rd ch at start, yo with B, drop B to wrong side; with A, yo and thru ch and lp on hook. Rnd 4: Start Jacquard Pat: Ch 3, with A working over B, dc in next 12 dc; holding last 2 lps on hook, dc in next dc, drop A to front; with B, yo and thru 2 lps on hook, drop A to wrong side (Color change - Note: work all color changes in this manner; carry dropped color by working over it), continue dc in each dc, working colors as follows: * 10 B, 2 A, 2 B, 6 A, 2 B, 2 A, 10 B, 2 A, 2 B, 2 A, 2 B, 6 A, 2 B, 2 A, 10 B*, 28 A; rep between *'s once, work 14 A, join as for band round 3; 2 pats begun. Rnds 5 thru 10: Repeating pattern twice around and working in dc with A between pats; join all rnds as for band round 3. ( Note: On the following rounds, drop color not in use to wrong side; do not carry.) Rnd 11: With A ch 3, dc in each dc around, join as for Band Rnd 1. Rnd 12: Repeat band round 2. Fasten off B. Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in each sc around, join in top of ch-3. Next Rnd: Ch 6, sk 2 dc, tr in next dc, * ch 2, sk 2 dc, tr in next dc; rep from * around, end ch 2, join in 4th ch of ch-6; 60 mesh. Rep mesh round 5, 3 times. Handles: First Point: Row 1: Ch 4, tr in next tr (1 mesh dec) (ch 2, tr in next tr) 10 times, ch 2, * yo twice, draw up lp in next tr (yo and thru 2 lps on hook) twice *; rep between *'s once, yo and thru all 3 lps (dec); 11 mesh. (Note: Ch-4 and tr at beg of row count as 1 st.) Row 2: Ch 4, turn, * tr in next tr, ch 2, rep from * to last 2 tr on previous row, dec over next 2 tr. Rep row 2, 3 times more. Row 6: Ch 4, turn, tr in next tr, ch 2, dec over next 2 tr. Row 7: Ch 4, turn tr in next tr, ch 70 for handle, cut yarn, hold last ch with safety pin. Second Point: From right side, on last rnd sk 1 tr to left of previous point, join new strand in next tr, work same as first point, but do not work ch for handle. Fasten off. Insert hook in dropped st of handle; with care not to twist ch, sl st in top of last tr on 2nd point. Fasten off. Third Point: From right side, on last rnd sk 1 tr to left of last point, join in next tr; work same as first point. Fourth Point: Work same as second point. Border: Inner Edge: Rnd 1: From right side, on last rnd, join A in tr left free between first and fourth points; sc in same tr, * sc in next 2 ch; working in side of point, work 3 sc in end of each row to top of point, sc in each ch of handle, 3 sc in each of row along point on other side, sc in next 2 ch on last rnd *, sc in center tr: rep between *'s around second half once: join in first sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, * working left to right; sk next sc, sc in next sc, ch 1; rep from * around, join in first sc. Fasten off. Outer Edge: From right side, join A in tr left free between 2 points, work same as inner edge.
